In this GIMP tutorial featuring the NEW GIMP 2.10 (Release Candidate 1), I'll show you how to manipulate multiple photos using some of GIMP's newest features. The final result will be a great juxtaposition between a bright, happy world and a dark, desolate world (an apocalyptic setting).
New features demonstrated in this tutorial include Layer Group Masks, Live-Edit Gradient, Dashboard Dockable dialogue box, Shadows-Highlights filter, Color Temperature, and the new Curves functionality - among others!

- Rahmat Rad: Thanks a lot for helping people
- Davies Media Design: The main upside is non-destructive editing - you can delete a layer mask at any time and revert back to the original layer. You can also paint items out or in using white/grey/black.
- Thomas Cahill: Great review, how do you install this? The developer ppa only has 2.9.9 and the website is the .tbz2 thing (i'm on Linux mint) Thanks
- Ricardo regalado: Great tutorial!
- Davies Media Design: The good news is that GIMP is working on upgrading from GTK+2 to GTK+3 (or 4), which should drastically improve the speed/performance of GIMP. It appears GIMP 3.0 is not too far off. But I agree, larger files do tend to be a bit slow.
- Price Small: selecting parts of images and use them as layers themselves seems always easier quicker and less complicated than configuring layer masks at all! what is the upside of using layer masks again? i just dont get it
- Zeek Street: Have you done any videos on how to properly layer, because my layering is bad and I always get my pics looking translucent. Is there something I'm doing wrong??
- Davies Media Design: Hey Thomas - I am not sure if they have a download package for 2.10-RC1 for Linux systems yet. If you follow the link in the video description it will take you to the downloads page where they have 2.10-RC1, but the two options they have are for Windows and Mac. Did you see if one of those packages worked for you? If neither do, I can mention it to the GIMP team and see what the status is on a Linux download package.
- Welcome To New Earth: Yes, i tried to but it' very complicated for me. However, I found this helpful link which shows that Gimp is already aware of the issue: http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/20633-can-t-browse-directories-in-gimp-2-10 . Apparently there is a portable version which works fine at https://www.partha.com, though only the 64-bit is available and my OS is 32-bit!
- Diemen Design: Have you tried editing at 1080p using kdenlive in Linux. I post my videos at 720p as I don't think mine need to be that size, but earlier on I used to do them in 1080p and no issues with editing or rendering. Mind you, I'm not using the distro's version of kdenlive, but rather the latest AppImage.
- Davies Media Design: Glad to hear it!
- shashank sharma: Great tutorial and well explained ! Thanks for creating these tutorials !
- Davies Media Design: Lol whoops!
- Caetano Veyssières: 4:22 oopsie (repeated phrase)
- logo tutorial 011: good tutorial masha allah
- Tom Ormiston: OK fair enough ;)
- Davies Media Design: Have you tried the stable GIMP 2.10 release? I just updated the download link in the description. It came out a few days ago.
- Davies Media Design: Thanks for watching and for the comment! All of my latest tutorials are in 1080p now (this was one of my last tutorials to be 720p).
- Jerome Dechant: I hope they don't take months to fix the issues with the file manager. I reverted to 2.8 version because of the file manager issues.
- Davies Media Design: I am definitely more of a fan of the legacy settings. Updates and new versions should have less time in-between from now on - or so we are told. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
- Davies Media Design: Try downloading the new GIMP updated (GIMP 2.10.2) and let me know if the problem is resolved in this latest version. If so, I will report it to users. https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
- Diemen Design: Great tutorial. If you haven't already, it would be awesome if you could post links to your tutorials in the Open Source Photography cummunity in Google+, and if you use Facebook in the Group there.
- Price Small: i can see how it is practical for workflow or to resource saving issues. i usually just copy the layer and keep an original invisible in layer list. its a lot of clutter sometimes... also im only using it for private purposes not for work. appreciate the response and inspiration from your vids!
- Zeek Street: Just subscribed I don't know much about gimp, but I've been using 2.8 for a year and I just downloaded 2.10 because of you. I want to get more creative
- Welcome To New Earth: Davies Media Design, I think I have the same issue.. I have 2.10.0 on windows 10 (32) and I can only save my files in documents or visible folders, if I try to browse my hard disk or save and export on an USB drive it's impossible! It's really slowing down my work... Do you have any clues on how to fix this or do I have to revert as well?
- labaxpyou: The first thing that i did after the upgrade was to downgrade to 2.8.22. This version runs annoyingly slow on my computer despite the "multicore" support and the OpenCL support. Do you see any difference on performance? My PC is a i7-6700, 32GB RAM and Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB VRam. For example when i open a 12MP photo (which is not big nowadays) and go to Colors-> Curves it takes some seconds to open.
- Davies Media Design: ¡Gracias por ver!
- labaxpyou: As i see your gimp is also kind of laggy. Great Tutorial by the way
- Welcome To New Earth: Davies Media Design, I downloaded it but though in this version I can browse and open files from an external USB (it took ages to open) or from the hard disk, when I try to save a file in the same path (e.g. E) the program freezes up... I love Gimp so i have to revert to the old version until the bug is fixed. Thanks for your help anyway!
- Davies Media Design: 720p is fine - but not as good as 1080p obviously. Unfortunately, the program I use gets glitchy when I'm doing lengthy tutorials at 1080p so I had to stop using it. I'll see if I can re-incorporate full HD videos again as I used to do in my older tutorials. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
- Worldz_of_Visions: Cool result. Thanks for the update on layer group masking. Could come in handy.
- Davies Media Design: Thanks for watching! The layer group masks are definitely going to be a game-changer.
- Poojan Joshi: Davies Media Design That's so nice of you man, Thanks
- Store Down - متجر التحميل: thank's
- Sepp Sowas: How does the it handle bigger files? I often work with Photos around 20MP, and the low Performance in Gimp was the reason i finally bought Photoshop. I really like Gimp and for some filters (G'MIC) i still use it. But ... it is slow. (i7-5930K; 32GB Ram; GTX970) Greetings from a new subscriber :)
- labaxpyou: Yeah. I installed the stable release. What i mean about the slowness is that when you open a new window like curves or saturation, it doesnt pop-up instantly like previous version. its lagging. The difference is bigger when you edit biggers files. Check 15:37 in your video to see what i mean. On 2.8 version curves would open instantly. Also appart from that there are also many more features which are slower.
- DAVID PINEDA: Excelente. Voy aprendiendo cada día.
- Davies Media Design: Thanks for the tip - I'll definitely check those communities out and post some links!
- Tom Ormiston: you've some fantastic tutorials, but are they all 720p? I'm viewing on a 27" display and 720p isn't good to be honest ;)
- Thomas Cahill: Thanks for the reply, yes the only have the gimp-2.10.0-RC1.tar.bz2 (for linux) where you have to compile and build which i don't know how to do and can be quite involving. Maybe if possible you can ask them if there is a ppa that has gimp-2.10.0-RC1 to intall it, as the developer ppa only has 2.9.9 Thanks!
- Davies Media Design: So, luckily, I was able to get 1080p working again with my screen recording software. All of my new tutorials are in 1080p. Thanks for the tip, though!
- Davies Media Design: They have made some major performance improvements with the latest stable release of GIMP 2.10 - so it should be much better at handling larger file sizes!
- Tom Ormiston: Version times depend on resource. It would be nice if you had note on how to contribute on your video notes or similar t.b.h (https://www.gimp.org/news/2018/03/26/gimp-2-10-0-rc1-released/#helping-gimp). Also as for the tech they are deciding if to next release use GTK 3 or GTK4 which is bleeding edge. Personally I'm hoping for GTK4. Currently they are on GTK2 (hence Gimp 2.x ). Ironically GTK, which is very important in free open source desktop software, was written initially to create Gimp (see history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTK%2B). It would be nice to see Gimp back up to date tech wise again on the GUI side ;)
- MoreChannelNoise: yeah the first thing I did was also to change the theme to light and the icons to legacy. Still waiting for recordable actions and layer styles, maybe another decade?
- Poojan Joshi: Hey Davies you're doing nice job but why don't you render videos in 1080p so that we can watch your videos even clearer! :)
- Davies Media Design: Hm - well that's a shame. I wish it would work for you! I would recommend reporting the bug to the GIMP team so they are aware of the issue and can try to get a bug fix for the next release. Here is the link to report the bug: https://www.gimp.org/bugs/
